In this ‘built’ series of articles I will take a specific ship and build out every pilot. I will try to take into account the ship itself, any pilot abilities and the lists they would form a part of.
The articles I do in this series are picked by my Patrons! I put a poll up with a list of ships to choose from and I’ll run with whatever the winner is. This time the U-Wing won out. If you’d like to get involved you can find my Patreon here.
As always this is just my opinion, if you have other suggestions feel free to leave them in the comments below. Some pilots will be just fine on their own, I won’t add upgrades just for the sake of it. I’ll go through the pilots in ascending initiative order.
Lastly, I will include the Pivot Wing configuration card in every build as it’s free and so it’s clear for new players.
You don’t see many Renegades around as it’s same the price as the Escort but is I1 to the Escort’s I2.
What it has over the Escort though is the illicit slot. I’ve picked Contraband Cynernetics as you can do two zero speed moves one after the other. This could really disrupt enemy lines due to the ship’s medium base, blocking more potential maneuvers. When you spend the charge you can do an action too! If you’re not fussed about stress you could stop, stop again and then do a coordinate action.
Blue Squadron Scout
Rewind nearly a year now and the ‘4U’ list (four U-Wings with various upgrades) was a big deal, and the Blue Squadron Escort was a big part of that.
At 43 points it’s pretty cheap and it can hold up to two crew which gives it a lot of utility. It’s a great candidate for carrying Leia as it has a decent amount of health. With the configuration giving you the ability to turn on the spot it really helps with the classic Rebel ‘slow roll’ and lets you adjust you bearing farely easily.
If you want to fly multiple Escorts then crew to consider using are Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor.
Heff likes to get in the way. At I2 he can do this pretty well too as the majority of the time he’ll be moving first. Just note that his ability only triggers when someone bumps into him, not the other around. He can’t shoot at the opponent at range zero but maybe he can coordinate a focus or lock to a friendly that can take advantage.
I’ve added Initmidation as it fits with his ability nicely. It can be very benefical to your other ships if you manage to get that block.
Benthic Two Tubes
As I mentioned in the T-65 Built article, Benthic is designed to fly alongside his sibling, Edrio. With this in mind Perceptive Co-Pilot is a must have crew. It enables Benthic to get two focus tokens; one to keep for himself and one to pass on to Edrio. It does lock Benthic into taking the focus action but the U-Wing doesn’t have an abundance of different action to take anyway. When if taking a focus ever a bad idea?
If you don’t want to fly Edrio then Benthic’s ability could be useful for other ships that want to take actions other than focus. Maybe Wedge who’d like a lock? I hear double modded torps from him a fairly decent….
K-2SO was one of the highlights of Rogue One for me so I’m pleased FFG managed to give him a decent ability in the game. He gets himself a calculate token every time he performs a stop or coordinate action. It may not be a lot but it’s mod more than you’d usually get and could be the difference.
You could utilise Advanced Sensors to take an action – a lock for example – then do a stop which nets you a calculate. Suddenly you have a double modded shot! It’s on the expensive side but could be good fun.
Like Bodhi, you don’t see Magva on the table. That’s a shame as her ability could be really useful for keeping high value friendly ships alive. Emphasis on ‘could’ there as your opponent could just rolls hits naturally (natties). Maybe when I finally get back to playing I’ll give her a go to see if she comes in handy or not.
I thought Jyn Erso would be a good addition as it carries on the theme of making friendly ships harder to hit.
If you’re flying Braylen (B-Wing) then you should always consider bringing Cassian too. His ability gives Braylen the freedom to move as he pleases each round as he can’t shed his stress like Ten Numb can (check out my B-Wing built article for an explanation). That’s the best example but he’s a great additition to any squad as the ability to remove stress tokens before activation is absolutely fantastic.
You could add Cassian’s partner, K-2SO for extra shenannigans! K-2 can pass a calculate and a stress to a friendly ship ship in the system phase. Cassian can then remove that stress at the start of the activation phase, giving that ship an extra mod. As a lot of Rebel ships have big guns and need to win the damage race this could be very useful.
At the time of writing this I have spent a day trying to work out how to make this guy at least half decent. I just can’t see why you’d bother! He wants to get to the action first so I don’t think I4 is right for him. Let me know what you guys think because I’m lost with this guy.
With Saw’s highish intiative and ability you want him to stay alive as long as possible as he helps damaged ships. Maybe think about pairing him up with some X-Wings; they generally get chipped away quite easily so you’ll be making use of his ability a good amount.
As he’s there to help out friendly ships it could be handy to put both Leia and Jyn crew, lots of utility! This may also make him a big target so could take the heat away from other high value ships.
That’s every U-Wing built. Let me know if you agree or not and share your builds in the comments.
Until next time!
