There’s a ridiculous amount of upgrades in X-Wing. If you’re one of those people that has an encyclopedic knowledge of them all, that’s great! But I’m willing to bet that a lot of us struggle to recall what everything does, especially when it comes to faction-specific upgrades. You can read part 1 here.
I wanted to go a bit deeper than that though. There’s some upgrades that have an obvious use but when you put your thinking cap on have much more utility. These upgrades are what I’m going to mention here.
For some reason Afterburners has always confused me so lets make this super clear. You can take a normal action and also afterburn. You can also afterburner boost and then do a normal action into a linked red action.
A StarViper would be a good example here; they can afterburner boost then barrel roll into a linked focus.
Vader in the x1 might be an even better example. He could potentially afterburner boost, take a lock as his normal action and then spend a force to take a focus which leads to a linked barrel roll.
Taking the Vader example a bit further, he could move over an asteroid, clear the asteroid (fully executing his move), afterburner boost then spend force charges to take more actions. He would still roll a die for going over the asteroid but he could still take at least two actions.
Did you know that if your other friendly ships lock “Matchstick” before engagement he could fire a double modded attack? His own focus plus the rerolls from the red lock tokens. Janky as hell but it can be done.
Did you know that if you have Kanan crew onboard and you’re not stressed you can perform a white maneuver over debris and use his ability to clear that stress? It means you can take an action too, noice.
“Klick” has the best ability of all the higher initiative V-Wings. That however is not saying much when one of the other ships in question is “Odd Ball”.
Did you know that instead of locking an enemy ship to stop range bonuses you can also lock a friendly ship to help them out too? The ability text mentions ‘a ship’, not an enemy ship. Could come in handy?
There are lots more of these but I need your help to find them all! Let me know in the comments what abilities and interactions I can mention here in the future.
