X-Wing Miniatures – Every StarViper Built!

In this ‘built’ series of articles I will take a specific ship and build out every pilot. I will try to take into account the ship itself, any pilot abilities and the lists they would form a part of.

The articles I do in this series are picked by my Patrons! I put a poll up with a list of ships to choose from and I’ll run with whatever the winner is. This time the StarViper won out. If you’d like to get involved you can find my Patreon here.

As always this is just my opinion, if you have other suggestions feel free to leave them in the comments below. Some pilots will be just fine on their own, I won’t add upgrades just for the sake of it. I’ll go through the pilots in ascending initiative order.

Black Sun Enforcer

At I2 with bendy barrel rolls (I know I know, Microthrusters), the Enforcer gives you many blocking options. With Advanced Sensors attached it gives you many more blocking options! Honestly you’re probably better off keeping these guys cheap but with their brilliant linked actions (boost or barrel roll into a linked focus) and a good amount of blue maneuvers meaning you’ll rarely be action starved. Just bear in mind none of their turns are blue so some foresight (not the card!) is required.

Update – Following the AMG points update, the StarViper no longer has the sensor slot. What feels like a mahoosive deal…isn’t? It’s not like we’re seeing Vipers everywhere is it, let alone Black Sun Enforcers. From now on I’d fly them nekkid.

Black Sun Assassin

I feel like StarVipers at I3 are in a weird spot. They’re not low enough intiative to be effective blockers but they’re not high enough to really take advantage of the bendiness. You’re also three points (at the time of writing) for a talent slot which feels….not great. I would keep the talent cheap and I love Crack Shot so on it goes.

A bigger problem they have is that you could save a point and take an I4 Fang Fighter instead….

Prince Xizor

Oh Xizor, for the longest time growing up my brother and I pronounced your name entirely wrong because we didn’t play Shadows of the Empire. Aside from having a difficult name, he also has a difficult ability. It looks good at first but then you realise that he won’t be at range one of friendly ships all that often. If you can manage it (fair play) then an expensive option would be to use Virago and Shield Upgrade to make him as tanky as possible. As he’s I4 and will not get out of a lot of higher initiative arcs you could also take Fearless to passively mod your attacks.

If you’re thinking about using this then great! But seriously just go ahead and take Guri.

Dalan Oberos

Dalan’s ability looks pretty cool when you first see it. But then you realise that he’s I4 so that ‘ace’ ability falls a little flat when I5 and I6 ships can still dance around you after you’ve made your choices.

To offset this I’d consider Collision Detector. It enables you to boost or barrel over obstacles and can even ignore their effects completely if you spend a charge. Remember if you tried to do this in normal circumstances you would simply fail the action. Alongside his ability this could put you in some very interesting positions that the enemy may not have considered. If you’re getting into these positions then Outmaneuver might be a good shout but think about the cost.

Update – We don’t have Collision Detector available now but we could replace it with Primed Thrusters. This fits very well with his ability as you can still perform a boost or barrel roll after taking the stress. In fact it might be better!

Guri’s ability means that you that have to fly aggressively to a degree. She wants to be at range one of the enemy, preferably just one enemy, so she can grab that focus token. With her high initiative of five and post-maneuver options she has a very good chance of arc dodging* so giving her outmaneuver feels good as it takes full advantage of the dodge. If played right she can live a long time and really make a dent in the process.

*Being a Rebel player this is an alien concept. I hear it’s fun and have often been on the receiving end of it.

102 points and 7 HP of unstoppable hate. For the players with balls of steel. The sheer amount of maneuver options this Guri build is insane. She can choose to boost before her maneuver (Advanced Sensors), straight after her maneuver (standard action or Afterburners) or in the end phase (Virago title). Kind of technically you could get four actions out of her in one round too; do at least a 3 speed basic maneuver, Afterburner boost, barrel roll into a linked calculate. Then if you end up a range one of an enemy ship you get a focus. Four actions (kind of) and profit!

If you’ve ever flown a Supernatural Reflexes Kylo then this might be your jam. If you want to be extra, extra lairy then stick Advanced Proton Torps on her too for the lolz.

Update – The above build was lairy anyway and super expensive so losing Advanced Sensors is not the worst thing to happen. It does remove a fair chunk of maneuver options though.

Adding Pattern Analyzer kinda (not really) works the same way so that’s an option. It gives her more options again at least.

That’s every StarViper built. Let me know if you agree or not and share your builds in the comments.

Until next time!
