I take a specific ship and build out every pilot in this ‘built’ series of articles. I will try to take into account the ship itself, any pilot abilities, and the lists they would form a part of.
The articles I write in this series are picked by my Patrons! I post a poll and then do a write-up on whichever ship wins. This time the Attack Shuttle (Phantom I) won out.
As always this is just my opinion, if you have other suggestions feel free to leave them in the comments below. Some pilots will be just fine on their own; I won’t add upgrades just for the sake of it but sometimes I may want to go janky. I’ll go through the pilots in ascending initiative order.
If you’d like to read the other ‘built’ articles I’ve written you can find them here.
The Attack Shuttle is a very cheap three-dice gun. “Zeb” is 33 points (at the time of writing). Generally, I think you’d leave it there but I’ve chosen to add a couple of things.
“Zeb”‘s ability is actually decent. The ability to cancel crits ahead of hits is…well it’s great…if it were on a ship with more than three hull (I guess that’s why the ability is used here!). Hence I’ve added the Hull Upgrade to hopefully make it count more.
Speaking of hopefully…I’ve also added Hopefull. Partly because it’s only 1 point but also because “Zeb” will not be the big target in your squad so he may be able to make use of that free boost to get into range one. Suddenly that’s four red dice from a ship totalling 39 points.
He could be used as a cheap crew carrier too. In the past, I’ve flown him alongside four X-Wings with Leia crew which was fun.
I’ll start by saying I know this is a pricey build (62 points at the time of writing). But I’d counter that by saying that no one flies Ezra anyway so why not go all in?!
Ezra’s ability is again, decent. If he’s stressed he can spend a single force charge to change two focus results to either hits and evades. With that in mind I’d always be either trying to do a barrel roll into the red evade or keep making red maneuvers, which the Attack Shuttle has five of.
I’ve added Maul as crew more for the extra force charge and less for his ability as that involves taking more stress. The other thing Maul enables is the use of ‘Dark Side’ upgrades which led me to checking out Malice for the first time. Mailce lets you spend a force charge to change either a focus or hit to a crit. That alone is strong. Note it stats ‘attack’ too, not ‘primary attack’. Along with that though, if the defender takes a face up pilot crit (we’ll ignore crew as that’s for Epic), Ezra recovers two force charges. I know you’re always going to recover one charge in the end phase but having the ability to recover both is really good.
I’ve added a Shield Upgrade as he’s already expensive at this point so worth trying to keep him around a bit longer. I’m actually super interested in trying this build…whenever I get back to playing ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Here’s a neat trick. Adding Debris Gambit to Sabine and flying close to obstacles makes her red linked evade white! So she now has a white barrel roll linked to a white evade. Add that to the boost (or barrel roll) before she activates and Sabine has some strong maneuvering options.
As we’re on an evade kick, Jyn is a strong addition to any squad. As long as your friendly ships are within range 3 they can gain an evade token instead of gaining a focus token. If the friendly in question has taken a beating that evade token could make all the difference. It’s worth nothing Jyn works on her carrier ships too, although Sabine may be evading a lot anyway.
With this Hera build I’ve tried to make her generally more rounded. Targeting Computer so she can lock (always a good option to have if you’re being shot at) and a Dorsal Turret for more arc coverage.
Nien Numb* bumps Hera’s blue maneuver number from five to eight which jives really well with her ability. Elusive also goes will due to the mount red maneuvers. All in all these should make Hera a bit more survivable with more maneuvering options.
*It’s been pointed out that the Hera/Nien combo maybe doesn’t work as Hera in the VCX has been FAQ’d. If that’s the case then I’d think about binning the Targeting Computer too to keep her cheap.
That’s every Attack Shuttle built. Let me know if you agree or not and share your builds in the comments. Please treat this as the conversation starter it’s supposed to be and not as someone trying to tell you how these ships should be built.

Until next time, pilots!
